"Four time gold medal winner, Al Oerter, 51, of West Islip, New York led the men's discus event with a throw of 58.45 meters in the 4th Annual Sri Chinmoy Masters Games held in Victory Field, Forest Hills, New York on Saturday July 23. Oerter's throw inaugurated the SRI CHINMOY PEACE-DISCUS THROW CIRCLE donated by the Sri Chinmoy Marathon Team to the users of Victory Field.

Oerter was among the masters athletes ages 50 and up who took part in the day’s track and field events ranging from 100, 200, 400, 3,000, and 5,000 meter races and 1 mile race walk to high jump, long jump, shotput, discus, javelin and tennis ball throw.

The men’s overall winner for the day with 22 points was Raul Rivadeneyra, 60, of Whitestone, New York. When asked how he felt after competing, he replied: 'It's like a dream come true.' Leading the women overall with 18 points was Jill Martin, 50, of Brooklyn. Ms. Martin runs for the Atlanta Track Club.

Highlights of the days events included Dr. Roosevelt Weaver’s win of 11:97 in the 100 meter 50-59 division and Marilyn Fitzgerald’s sweep for the women’s 50-59 division in the 100 (14:27), 200 (30:46) and 400 meter (1:10:28) events. Dr. Weaver, 51, of Upper Montclair, N.J., a Harvard track coach from 1969-1971, currently holds the 45-50 year old world record in the 50 yard dash (5.3) set in 1982 at West Point. Ms. Fitzgerald, 53, of Yardley, Pennsylvania, holds the 45-50 women’s national indoor record for 60 meters (7.77).

Indicative of the rising standard among the senior athletes were the 16 new meet records set. Among the records were Witold Bialokur’s win of 4:32 in the men’s 50-59 1,500 meter event. Mr. Bialokur, 53, of Rego Park, New York, is the founder of Witold’s Runners.

Participants came from as far as Virginia, Florida, and New Hampshire to participate in the games which began promptly at 8 a.m. with a march past of all participants around the Victory Field track."

Note from Race Director Rupantar LaRusso: " The Marathon Team, with the cooperation of the NYC Parks Department, installed an Olympic size cement discus platform because we knew Al was planning to attend the event. About this time Al was contemplating returning to competition, so he was in good throwing shape. We always had a good field of discus throwers at our masters games, but of course no one of Al's capacity. The discus area was in one corner of a large grass field with a baseball diamond facing us at the opposing corner, quite a distance away, or so we thought. A baseball game was soon to start. We had no idea how far Al could throw. A giant of a man who moved with the grace of a ballerina, his warm up throws went further and further until they started landing on the distant baseball diamond. We then had to ask the baseball teams to wait until the discus competition was over. Wow!"
