About the author:

Medur is our go-to person for many of the essential tasks involved in putting on our races: race setup, our lap counting system and our website. An enthusiastic runner himself, he has participated in many editions of the Sri Chinmoy Oneness-Home Peace Run in Canada and the US.

300 runners completed the marathon on Tuesday morning in Rockland Lake State Park.

2015 Self-Transcendence Marathon at Rockland Lake: a race report by Ricardo Enrique Murillo

The following post race report was written by Ricardo Enrique Murillo (a writer, and a veteran of 25 marathons, including Boston and a 50 kilometer race when he turned 50) who can be contact at [email protected]

RUNNING BEYOND YOUR LIMITS
August 25, 2015. Two weeks ago the weather channel predicted 88 degrees with high humidity for this marathon day. Every single day I kept on checking it to see if there was a pleasant surprise in store for us. There was no such luck. In fact, it went up to 92 degrees and we felt out of breath since the beginning of the nine three mile loops around Rockland Lake.
Why did we do it? You may ask. Some of the almost 300 participants whom I interviewed said: “for the experience”. The Self-Transcendence Marathon is put together by the Sri Chinmoy followers. Sri Chinmoy was a religious leader who believed that the body and the mind can reach the greatest accomplishments if we push ourselves beyond our limits.

What went through our mind during this quest? First, I must say that getting to Rockland Lake was part of the job. Shortly after 3:00 am a severe thunderstorm woke me up. I had an early breakfast consisting of oatmeal with peach slices, a couple of prunes, a banana and soy milk. I did my morning Buddhist prayers and headed out with an umbrella in my hands.
We live in Warwick, NY, and for the first 30 minutes I had to go over steep mountains on a winding, narrow road. Thunder and dense fog reduced my visibility to a few meters and affected the driving conditions. Luckily, it was 4:30 am and the commuters (to the city) were not out yet. So, considering that my destination was only 50 minutes away, I had enough time to be there before the 7:00 am start.
While the wipers cleared the window, and the radio diffused my tension, I kept on checking the temperature and noticed that it was almost 80 degrees.
However, I was surprised to see that it had not rained in Rockland County, which seemed good, because you do not want to pick up your bib number in the middle of a storm. Thick clouds covered the sky. I saw an almost empty lot and I thought the organizers had decided postponed the race. Then several big buses arrived and, one by one, the international runners inundated the parking lot and started walking towards the tents.
I followed them and got myself mentally ready to run. The temperature wasn’t bad. In fact, it was a very good temperature to walk near the Lake. The red sun appeared behind the forest. A flock of white docks swam over the lake and I couldn’t stop watching them. They looked so serene. I just wished the temperature would stay the same while we ran. I did not mind if it rained later on, but some times the weather plays tricks on us, and we are forced face unexpected challenges.

There was no “Star Spangled Banner” on the speakers, No “Rocky”, no “Born to Run”, no “New York, New York”, no “Chariots of Fire”. The MC gave the final instructions in about a minute, and invited runners to freely and non-denominationally pray, if we wished to pray in silence, and started the race.
The morning walkers and cyclists moved to the sides to greet us. Runners seemed festive despite the forecast. At times, we ran under the shade, and, at times, we had the option to run on dirt or stay on the bike path. It did not take long before we got to the first water station. “Water”, “Gatorade”, they announced while holding cups we could grab on the run.

When we completed the first lap we knew the supporting team was well organized. It was so well coordinated that everything seemed so smooth and simple. Several volunteers were running on the opposite direction to encourage us with their kind words and smiles. We encountered several women chanting motivational verses on the Lake’s side while playing accordions and guitars. And we were told someone with an official t-shirt would escort us to the finish line in case we lost track of our laps.

But the finish line was still far away even though we saw it every time we went around the Lake. We saw the crowd, consisting of men, women and children coming from over 30 countries. They sat on benches, drinking liquids, eating snacks, and clapping every time they saw us passing by. More that once, I wished it was the end, but my watch indicated otherwise: I still had a long way to go. The heat continued rising and my speed dramatically decreasing to periodic walks.
At one point I noticed there was a short, Hispanic, marathon maniac (marathon maniacs are avid runners who run more than two marathons a year, and some even run a race in every US state) pushing herself. When I walked, she passed me; when I ran, I passed her. We probably saw each other 50 times. She never walked. She always ran consistently at her own pace. She was so small I still don’t know where she got her strength to beat the heat.

Of course, the leading groups were lapping us, bouncing effortlessly and the MC had told us earlier to hurry up because they had a limited amount of food and it would be served on a first come basis. We laughed. Later on a vehicle arrived with trays of food and by 10:00 am we could see the first finishers happily resting and eating their vegetarian meals under the trees.

I still had three laps to go. Most of us were taking walking breaks. If there was a video of the race on YouTube you would think the marathon maniac and I were competing. We were struggling. At least I did, and not longer cared about my time. I just wanted to finish.
“All the Boston qualifiers, please come to the main tent soon as you finish the race so we can write and post your names today,” the MC had said in the morning. I knew I wasn’t going to be in that group. Even a 70 degree temperature is too hot for me.  I prefer 40s and 50s. I decided to use the Self Transcendence Marathon as a training distance for my next (Chicago) race. I hope we get a better weather on October 11th.

It was a joy to eat the food I love. I felt sorry for the runners who were still on the course. I continued hydrating myself throughout the day. We could eat as much as we wanted. A chorus sang while standing on the grass. The organizers and the volunteers were busy, trying to meet all our needs. There was an ambulance. Three physical therapists were massaging the exhausted runners. I was too sweaty to get one.

I always like to stay for the award ceremony and congratulate the winners in different categories. They all looked so strong, and some amazingly young. We were all happy now despite our slow times. I could hear expressions of excitement in different languages. Some of them travel to the US every summer specifically to run in this race. I do not exaggerate when I say that we were in Babel and all of us, Sri Chinmoy followers or not, pushed ourselves beyond our limits, and we were glad we did.
