"Familiar faces lined the front field of the Sri Chinmoy Half Marathon, November 21 at Flushing Meadow Park, Jamaica, NY, but it was Mike Feurtado, NYTFC, a New York newcomer from Jamaica, West Indies who broke the tape at 1:07:57. Second was West Side Y's Placido Cruz-Martin, who clocked 1:08:20. It was Cruz-Martin who surged in the eleventh mile to pull away from the steady six-man lead pack, taking only Feurtado with him. However, Feurtado caught and passed Cruz-Martin one mile later to open then maintain his finishing 23-second lead.
Woman's Division was headed by two up-and-coming runners: first place Inez McLean, 1982 Spanish Championship Marathon winner (2:46+) who set a new course record at 1:20:41; and second place Monica Scarborough (1:1:41, from Brooklyn), the eleven year old who clocks grown-up times. A record holder since age 10, Monica won this event in the 1981 running, but was ineligible to claim her award because she failed to register before the race.
Other top metro area finishers included Luis Borja (1:09:22), Remulus Della Valle (1:09:36), Paul Schwartz (1:08:20) and Cahit Yeter (1:17:46). and wife Sharon..."
