  • The Sri Chinmoy Marathon Team History 1989; the 50 Km/50 Mile Race

By Rupantar LaRusso author bio »

    About the author:

Rupantar has been the race director of the Sri Chinmoy Marathon Team since 1985, having been asked by Sri Chinmoy to serve in that capacity. As well as working on the big races the US Marathon Team organise each year - the 3100 Mile Race and the Six and 10 Day Race - he also spends a considerable amount of time archiving the Marathon Team's 40 year history on this website.

The Sri Chinmoy 50 km/50 Mile Race, from the original press release:

"...The Sri Chinmoy races had an unusually large field of 55 ultra runners. Many, from the local area, were in training for the up-coming 100 Mile National Championship, being held on the same course three weeks later, April 1. Winners of the 50 km race were Sammukh Sheridan, Jamaica, NY (323:35) and Christine Gibbons, Elmwood, NJ (3:40:51). Winners of the 50 mile event were Ed Finnegan, West Haven, Connecticut (6:34:48) and Suprabha Schecter, Washington, DC (7:44:35). All four lowered the existing race records for the events.

Local favorites who placed well in the 50 Mile Race include men's over 60 winner Dictino Mendez of Flushing (9:48:22); men's over 70 winner Willie Rios of Bellrose (9:18:42); and in the under 50 category 4th place finisher Stanley Paccione of Astoria, NY (7:08:56) and 6th place finisher Trishul Cherns of South Ozone Park (7:25:45).

Local favorites in the 50 kilometer race included men's under 50 2nd place finisher Arpan DeAngelo of Jamaica (3:27:35) and 7th place finisher Jeff Spera of Middle Village (3:59:36); over 50 winner Tim Kourounis of Rosedale (4:06:33) and second place Saurjya Clark of Jamaica (4:27:33). Top local winners in the women's division were 6th place Pragati Pascal of Jamaica (5:48:32) and 8th place Maria Klein of Bayside (6:07:38)."
