Sri Chinmoy 50 Km & 50 Mile Races, March 7, 1992

By Rupantar LaRusso author bio »

About the author:

Rupantar has been the race director of the Sri Chinmoy Marathon Team since 1985, having been asked by Sri Chinmoy to serve in that capacity. As well as working on the big races the US Marathon Team organise each year - the 3100 Mile Race and the Six and 10 Day Race - he also spends a considerable amount of time archiving the Marathon Team's 40 year history on this website.

Toy, Atala. "Sri Chinmoy 50 Km & 50 Mile. Ultrarunning. May 1992.

Twenty-four runners braved a steady rainfall and buffeting winds. Frank DeLeo of Brooklyn broke away from Prospect Park teammate Al Prawda to take first-place honors in the 50-km. Kaaren Schilke-Cherns took first place for the women, finishing in tandem with her husband, Canadian ultra record holder Trishul Cherns.

The 50-milers were led by Don Davis of Bethlehem, Pa. Finishing second, in his first ultra ever - a celebration of his 40th birthday - was Joe Sikora. In the women's race, Barbara McLeod of Ottawa set a Canadian age-group record for women 50 and older.

The race would not have been complete without Egor Egan's dramatic finish, hours after everyone else had come across the line.
