September 20, 2005 -- The women's race started with a tight group of three Americans, Sarah Haskins, Sarah Groff and Julie Swail, coming out of the water together. In the end, Haskins, a resident at the Colorado Springs Olympic Training Facility, prevailed to win the women's title, her first major pro victory. Haskin's time was 2:03:56.8. Swail and Groff faded during the run segment and were overtaken by American and three-time world champion Karen Smyers, who finished second with a 2:03:56.8. Swail was third with a 2:05:16.1. The men and women pros split a $25,000 prize purse, which includes a $1,000 swim prime to the fastest man and woman. The swim prime was collected by Joshua Rix of Australia and Swail.

Canadian Michael Simpson grabbed the first major triathlon title of his pro career by winning the 6th Annual City of Los Angeles Triathlon by nearly a minute over Australian Richie Cunningham. Simpson, 22, clocked a 1:51:33.9 to win the Olympic-distance race comprised of a 0.9-mile ocean swim off Venice Beach, a 24.8-mile bike course through Hollywood and a 6.2-mile run segment ending in downtown LA. Cunningham's time was 1:52:25; Brazilian Fabio Cavalho finished in third place with a 1:52:37.9. Two-time Hawaii Ironman world champion Tim DeBoom of Colorado was the highest ranking American, finishing fourth with a 1:52:58.

Simpson came out of the water in 11th position and started making up ground in the bike segment, where he moved into third. He took the lead in the first mile of the run and held it all the way to the finish-line tape. "I'm shocked but really happy," said Simpson after the race. "We don't have [ocean] waves in Canada, so the swim was very, very tough. I wanted to do better in the swim than I did, but I wasn't too concerned. It's only the first 20 minutes of the race. There was still another hour and a half to go after that."
