About the author:

Rupantar has been the race director of the Sri Chinmoy Marathon Team since 1985, having been asked by Sri Chinmoy to serve in that capacity. As well as working on the big races the US Marathon Team organise each year - the 3100 Mile Race and the Six and 10 Day Race - he also spends a considerable amount of time archiving the Marathon Team's 40 year history on this website.

"Mark MacIntyre of Greenwich, CT, won the fourth annual Sri Chinmoy Triathlon, Misquamicut, RI in a record 4:58:56. Second place Jody Durst, of Mt. Kisco, NY, finished in 5:01:28, cutting five minutes off his 1982 winning time of 5:06:04. The Triathlon is a 76 1/2 mile event: 1 1/2 mile ocean swim, 60 mile bike and 15 mile run.

It was a tight duel between the first two finishers. Both are training full time for this relatively new category of sports event and both are planning on taking part in the famed Iron Man Triathlon in Hawaii. MacIntyre, a strong runner, was winner of the 1979 Sri Chinmoy Triathlon. In the August 8 event, he repeated his last year's movement, where he pulled up on Durst well into the final segment, the run. Durst held off his competition in '81: this year, at the thirteen mile point, MacIntyre finally pulled ahead for good, after several unsuccessful attempts, and went on to win with over a two minute lead.

Winner for the women's division was Claire McCrea of Spencer, MA, in 6:03:51. Claire has been competing in this category of events for three years now.

Over 300 swimmers entered the water at 7 am for a swim that paralleled the beach through choppy waters. James Cutrone of Brooklyn emerged the winner of this segment, finishing in 32:55. James went on to finish 99th overall, in 6:48:09.

Positions changed dramatically by the end of the biking segment. Charlie Graves of Villanova, PA, was leading at this point, clocking 3:23:22. Durst, who had finished twelfth in swimming, had moved into second position and MacIntyre had moved up from 21st to 5th. Shortly into the run Durst moved ahead, and maintained his lead until overtaken by MacIntyre.

Among local New York favorites competing in the race was Stu Mittleman, holder of the national record for 100 miles. Stu, a former swimming instructor, came in 197th in swimming at 1:02:25; moved up to 161st in biking at 4:39:26; and in running, his strongest event, picked up 57 positions to finish 54th overall at 6:19:44. It was Stu's first Triathlon, and he expects to take part in more..."
