The Sri Chinmoy 70 Mile Race, May 5, 1984

About the author:

Rupantar has been the race director of the Sri Chinmoy Marathon Team since 1985, having been asked by Sri Chinmoy to serve in that capacity. As well as working on the big races the US Marathon Team organise each year - the 3100 Mile Race and the Six and 10 Day Race - he also spends a considerable amount of time archiving the Marathon Team's 40 year history on this website.

"James Dempsey, who one week earlier finished 8th out of a field of 61 at Lake Waramaug, ran 9:59:13 to a first place win in the Sri Chinmoy 70-Mile Run, May 5 in Flushing Meadows Park, Queens, NY. Not far behind him was 31-year old Frank Deleo of Prospect Park TC, pulling in a solid 10:15:13 for the farthest distance he had run to date. Teammate and third place winner Al Prawda, stride for stride with Deleo going into the last one-mile loop, said, 'We discussed going for a tie. But I wanted to try something new; a fast second-to-last lap and an easy final one. So I lost to both Frank and James - but I made two friends.' Al came three minutes behind Deleo with 10:18:17. Fourth place went to Jorge Ramirez of the West Side Y, who clocked a noteworthy 10:33:09 for his first ultra.

Nathan Whiting held his own celebration as he marked the '1,000th mile counted for me by the Sri Chinmoy Marathon Team.' In thanks, Whiting interrupted his run to present to Sri Chinmoy a personally penned poetry book which was accepted by the counters on their team founder's behalf.

Lysinger.jpegIn training for the New York 6-Day was Stu Mittleman, who went out easy for the first 45 miles then upped his pace to finish 11:33:59. Stu is scheduled to soon run 6 marathons in 6 days in 6 different cities as part of a lecture/race program he has decided to follow for a year. Letting his New York apartment go and living primarily out of his van, Stu plans to travel from race to race, lecturing along the way to various interest groups on the concept of 'the body's unlimited potential'.

Prawda.jpegJohn Korff, 32, of New York City, set the pace through 50K, with Nathan Whiting and Al Prawda trailing by a half-mile at the split. Within the stretch from 50K to 50-miles, Whiting captured the lead, as James Dempsey, 5th at 50K, moved into second. Korff dropped out after the 50-mile split, Whiting eased up his pace and Dempsey and Prawda overtook him at 52 miles with  Dempsey leading Prawda. Prawda hung onto second until Frank Deleo, feeling stronger as the miles increased, pulled alongside and passed him with less than a mile to go. Twenty-four runners entered the race; fifteen finished..."
