The Sri Chinmoy Rainbow Marathon, September 27, 1988

About the author:

Rupantar has been the race director of the Sri Chinmoy Marathon Team since 1985, having been asked by Sri Chinmoy to serve in that capacity. As well as working on the big races the US Marathon Team organise each year - the 3100 Mile Race and the Six and 10 Day Race - he also spends a considerable amount of time archiving the Marathon Team's 40 year history on this website.

Flushing Meadows-Corona Park

(from the original press release): "New York City firefighter Kevin Malley of the Bronx, led the field today with a win of 2:53:28 in the Sri Chinmoy Rainbow Marathon. Malley, who has a marathon best of 2:40 will be running with his team, the New York City Fire Department in the upcoming New York City Marathon. Albert Bouchard of Manhattan took 2nd with a personal record of 3:07:48 in the men's open division, while ultra running great Alan Fairbrother, also of Manhattan, took first in the men's 50 and over division in a time of 2:57:22.

In the women's division, Beverly Shabat of Brooklyn took home the winning trophy in a time of 4:31:52."

The marathon was run on a one mile loop and is part of the monthly Sri Chinmoy Rainbow Marathon series run on the 27th of every month. (Editor's note: the size of the field varied from about 10 runners during the winter months to over 70 runners during the summer).

”Sri Chinmoy Marathon Team” (Press Release). Weisbrot, Bhikshuni. April 27, 1988. Retrieved 2012-01-17. Archive copy at the Sri Chinmoy Marathon Team office.

“’I used to live near the park (Flushing Meadow Corona Park) and watch you people run races’, said 1st place winner Brian Doyle. ‘I thought you were crazy’. Doyle’s win of 3:14:39 was his first marathon in 4 years. 2nd and 3rd place winners, Simahan Pierce and Pascal Weber finished in times of 3:18:35 and 3:23:09.

Women’s winner, ‘kiwi' Louise Thurston of New Zealand ran her first marathon ever in 4:07:05 (the women’s course record of 2:58 set in December 1987 is still held by Patchogue’s Cindy Scott). Running great Sy Mah, 61, fresh from his 3:27 finish in (the) Boston (Marathon) and the Sybil Ludington 50K -  a 2 a.m. drive from Cambridge – and plans for (the) Pittsburgh (Marathon) on the weekend, won the men’s over 60 division in 4:34 – his 502nd lifetime marathon since the age of 40. He and 1,000 mile champ Trishul Cherns were just out ‘for an easy training run’. Professor Sy spends his ‘unrunning’ time doing research at Harvard and said ‘it looks good in favor of exercise for increasing our lifespan’.  Sy is also the man who put on the first marathon where it was legal for women to run (Eastern Canadian Championship – 1967) and trained ultra greats Mary Hanudel (who holds the  U.S. 6 day track record) and Lorna Richey (who holds the U.S. 200Km record)."
