"A woman, for the first time, is the overall winner of a national distance championship. Ann Trason, 29, of Oakland, California, ran 143 miles to win the Sri Chinmoy USA/TAC 24 Hour Championship held September 16-17 in Flushing Meadows Corona Park, NY. She is now the 1989 USA/TAC 24 Hour Women's Champion. Trason's mileage establishes a new national record for women, bettering by 11 miles the previous record of 132 miles set by Mary Hanudel of Toledo, Ohio in 1986..." En route to her win, Ms. Trason set a women's world record for 100 miles, running 13:55:02 - over one half hour better than her own previous world record of 14:29; and the women's world 12 hour record of 88 miles.
