Victory Field, Forest Hills, NY; July 14 - over 150 track and field athletes ages 45 to 84 gathered from throughout the East Coast for a day of Olympic-style track and field events. It was the 7th Annual Sri Chinmoy Masters Games and, reflecting the growing capacities of entire field of older athletes, 53 meet records were set. Overall men's winner for the day was 60 year old Giorgio Chiavelli, Garden State Athletic Club, from Westwood, NJ (20 points, including 5 first places and 3 meet records). Women's winner was Zofia Turosz, Witold's Run Runners, Hartford, CT (34 points, including 11 first places and 6 meet records).
A slightly-built, curly haired brunette with a contagious smile, Zofia immigrated from Poland some 5 years ago and works as a janitor at the Hartford Courant newspaper. She had taken up running in her 40s, winning distance events in Eastern Europe. After moving to the USA, she won her age category in a number of marathons, including Boston (2:52 in 1987), New York in 1989 and Los Angeles (3:13 in 1990). For 1990, Running Times magazine named her Runner of the Year for ages 50-54.
In the Sri Chinmoy Masters Games, Zofia established her position as best women's athlete from the start and eventually won outright, over all other women, regardless of age, in six events: 400 meters (1:16), 800 meters (2:48), 3000 meters (11:38), 1 mile racewalk (9:39), 1 mile run (6:04), and the long jump ( 3 meters 21 centimeters); won for her age group in the 100 meters, 200 meters, shotput, discus and javelin; and placed 3rd for her age group in the high jump.
