Just after a beautiful, misty dawn over Miramar Lake, 40 intrepid athletes took off. The morning hours were cool and overcast--ideal conditions for endurance running. Eventually the sun came out and made things slightly more difficult but everyone carried on.

The first 5 hours of the race were on a 5-mile course hugging the lake, surrounded by chaparral, ducks, and people enjoying Thanksgiving Week recreation at the lake. Toward the end, the course switched to a 1-mile out-and-back leg where runners got their second wind and finished strong!

The 6-hour challenge offers an opportunity for athletes of all paces to test their endurance and enjoy an active morning in nature. Though the race offered age-group awards, the prevailing feeling was one of self-transcendence--each person doing their best and experiencing the joy of sport.

The two overall winners achieved outstanding results for the 6-hour time frame: 25-year-old Jose Herrera completing 45.1 miles and 44-year-old Christina Soo Rhee achieving 38.06 miles.

Another notable perfomance was put up by 60-year-old Steven Cologne (making his way to San Diego from Vancouver) with 38.06 miles.

Congratulations to all the runners and walkers! It was a delight to watch and support you.

The San Diego Sri Chinmoy Marathon Team plans to hold the event again in November 2024 with an expanded field of 70 athletes. If you want early notification of the event, please email [email protected]
