It was another beautiful day at Lake Miramar--but a hot one for running. Nevertheless, 52 athletes ranging in age from 16 to 89 were up for the challenge.
Runners and walkers completed 5-mile loops for most of the duration and then were credited for extra mileage if they reached one of the three outpost aid stations. We had finishers at four locations!
With 45 miles, 27-year-old Jose Herrera achieved the three-peat, having won this race each year since the inaugural event in 2023. In the Women's open division, first-timer Fontayne Washington took the honors with 37.5 miles--and an overall 4th place.
Another notable performance was put up by Piotr Jek: 41 miles for this 57-year-old, placing him in second place overall (and first in the Men's 50-59 category).
The two overall winners received giant homemade apple pies courtesy of Jyoti-Bihanga Vegetarian Restaurant (as well as some free meal certificates and a goody basket). Other Open and Age-Group award recipients received the baskets and free meal certificates as well. All participants a "medal" (actually a lovely wooden medallion with an image of the lake) and a Certificate of Achievement noting their mileage.
Early in the race a large rattlesnake appeared very close to our race staging area but was held back by a wire fence. The snake had eaten an animal and its enlarged belly foiled its multiple attempts to fit through the holes in the fence. Instead it lingered for hours just a few feet (safely) away watching the action.
We hope everyone (except maybe the rattlesnake) will be back for the 2026 race! Likely date is Sunday, Nov. 8.
