By Rupantar LaRusso author bio »

About the author:

Rupantar has been the race director of the Sri Chinmoy Marathon Team since 1985, having been asked by Sri Chinmoy to serve in that capacity. As well as working on the big races the US Marathon Team organise each year - the 3100 Mile Race and the Six and 10 Day Race - he also spends a considerable amount of time archiving the Marathon Team's 40 year history on this website.

"Hampton (Feb. 7) -- 24-year old Dave Severance, of Gilmanton, NH, ran 2:24:19 at the third annual Sri Chinmoy Inspiration Marathon, taking three minutes off the previous NH record set by Kurt Launstein in 1978. Severance, who qualified for the Olympic marathon, ran for Turtletown AC.

Second place went to the area's running legend, Rick Bayko, who came in at 2:27:00 - also under the previous state record time. Amy Morss-Leeds, 25, of Willimantic, CT came in at #:13:44. Amy, who trains with her husband, track coach Peter Leeds, bettered his marathon time by five minutes.

The Inspiration Marathon was begun three years ago to 'inspire' long distance runners to maintain their road mileage during the cold months. Over 240 runners were inspired to run the race and 35 qualified for the Boston Marathon. The entrant coming the farthest was Sipra Lloyd of the SCMT in Adelaide, Australia. The club with the largest representation was the Boston AA.

The weather warmed up into a sunny, mild winter day, with no ice on the snow-lined roads. The two-loop course cut through scenic marshlands in a route that paralleled the coastline for a total of nine miles.

The race was the second in the Sri Chinmoy Marathon Team's 1982 twelve-marathon series. The one-a-month marathon are taking place at locations from Australia to Germany."

Malenfant, Steve. "Bayko places second in Sri Chinmoy Marathon." Newburyport Daily News, February 8, 1982.

'The people from Sri Chinmoy do an excellent job running a race,' stated Emery. 'They know how to put on a race. Well, to qualify form Boston (Masters Division), you have to run a 3:10 so I am quite happy, it was quite a thrill.'
