Legh, Allison Win Ironman USA Coeur d'Alene

By Shane Facteau

COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho-Chris Legh (Australia) and Lynley Allison (New Zealand) claimed the men‚s and women‚s titles respectively at the 2004 Ironman USA Coeur d‚Alene triathlon held Sunday in Coeur d‚Alene.

Legh used a strong run to post an overall time of eight hours, 42 minutes and 56 seconds, overtaking second-place finisher Matt Seeley (Polson, Mont.) with a little more than a mile to go on the run.

Seeley stood in second place for much of the day behind early front-runner Matt Dixon (Santa Monica, Calif.) Seeley overtook Dixon late in the bike and held the lead throughout 25 miles of the marathon, before being passed by Legh in the home stretch. Dixon would later pull out on the run portion of the event.

Seeley, who was third at the inaugural Ironman USA Coeur d‚Alene triathlon last year, finished with an overall time of 8:44:45.

The win was the second of Legh's long Ironman career, as the Australian standout also won the Ironman California triathlon back in 2000.

Andriy Yasterbov (Ukraine) finished third overall in 8:52:52 with Andy Martin (Bend, Ore.) fourth in 9:03:12 and Brent Lorenzen (Irvine, Calif.) fifth in 9:09:31. Yasterbov posted the fastest run on the day for the men with a time of 2:48:26, while Seeley was the quickest on the bike, finishing in 4:43:30.

The women‚s side saw Allison, last year‚s runner-up at the Coeur d‚Alene event, dominate on the bike and run to post the first Ironman win of her career.

Allison took control during the bike and would post an overall time of 9:31:56, 10 minutes faster than second-place winner and last year's champion Heather Gollnick (Hartford, Wisc.)

Gollnick, who competed despite suffering a serious bike crash a little over two weeks ago, finished with a time of 9:41:48.

Karen Holloway (Richmond, Va.) finished third overall in 9:53:29, while Monica Caplan (Boulder, Colo.) was fourth in 9:59:46 with Amanda Gillam (Boulder, Colo.) fifth in 10:01:49.

Caplan posted the fastest swim time among female competitors (49:39) and set the pace early on the bike, before being overtaken by Allison.

An Ironman triathlon consists of a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bike followed by a complete marathon. Athletes have 17 hours (7 a.m.-midnight) to complete the daunting event.

Close to 1,800 athletes (1,790) competed in Ironman USA Coeur d‚Alene, which took place for the second time. Athletes were competing for 80 qualifying spots to the Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii as well as a $50,000 pro prize purse.
