The Sri Chinmoy 70/100 Mile Race, April 2, 1988

By Rupantar LaRusso author bio »

About the author:

Rupantar has been the race director of the Sri Chinmoy Marathon Team since 1985, having been asked by Sri Chinmoy to serve in that capacity. As well as working on the big races the US Marathon Team organise each year - the 3100 Mile Race and the Six and 10 Day Race - he also spends a considerable amount of time archiving the Marathon Team's 40 year history on this website.

Barbara McLeod.jpg"The Sri Chinmoy races have always been known for excellent organization, fast times, accurate courses, and high spiritual energy. This race was all these and more - one of the top ultra races in the nation.

The race started with an illuminating meditation by spiritual master Sri Chinmoy. Then Terry Martin of Ontario blasted out, his stride perfect. The weather was great (overcast, 50-60 degrees) and Martin sped the first ten miles in 63:50. His marathon split was 2:54 and he was under 3:30 at 50 km. He never let up, reaching 50 miles in 5:52, 100 km in 7:30. His 12-hour total was over 91 miles and he finished the 100-mile in first place with a world-class and Canadian record time of 13:18:25.

The mighty Ray Krolewicz set a 16-minute personal record ran  second with a sub-14 hour 100-mile time. In the last nine weeks Ray's training and racing included 1,027 quality miles.

Barbara McLeod (photo: Ranjit), at 50, became the first Canadian woman to break 20 hours for 100 miles with her 19:10 victory in the women's race.

Luis Rios of the Prospect Park Track Club outclassed the 70-mile field with his 10:48 time.

Special thanks to the Sri Chinmoy Marathon Team for their plentiful encouragement and marvelous food. Trishul Cherns"
