Carlos Rodriguez, 36, and his father Jose, 61, both running for the West Side Y, took top honors at the Ted Corbitt 7 Mile Race, held 24 October at Randall’s Island by the Sri Chinmoy Marathon Team. Carlos won the open division in 40:49 and Jose took the over 60 division in 50:41 in this special race, held to honor Ted Corbitt, age 73, known as the Father of American Ultrarunning. Corbitt, who has frequently advised the SCMT in its 14 year history of ultra racing, helped found the RRCA, the NYRRC, the NY Running News and was for many years one of America’s chief statisticians and road certifying officials. 1993 was the 20th year anniversary of his American record 24-hour run (134 miles).
One hundred runners took to the track to honor Corbitt and, fittingly, top honors were taken by winners of the recent Sri Chinmoy Ultimate Ultra. Australian Dipali Cunningham, who won the 1,000 miler women’s race, also won the women’s division of the 7 miler (49:37) while Latvian Georgs Yermolaev, over-50 winner of the 1,300 mile event, took the men’s over 50 division in the 7 miler with 43:27. Women’s over-50 division was won by Atala Toy, SCMT, in 1:06:22.
