Daigle named Athlete of the Week

Angela Daigle has been named USA Track & Field's Athlete of the Week...

INDIANAPOLIS - Angela Daigle has been named USA Track & Field's Athlete of the Week after her world-leading performance in the women's 60m dash, and victory in the Visa Championship Series, Sunday at the USA Indoor Track & Field Championships in Boston, Massachusetts.

Daigle, who prior to Sunday had just one professional victory to her credit - at the 2005 Millrose Games - blasted out of the blocks in the women's 60m to run a world-leading time of 7.09 seconds. The 28-year-old's mark was also a personal best giving her 1,203 points and the title of women's Visa Champion. With that title came a $25,000 payday - plus $2,500 in prize money for the U.S. win - and a trip for two to a premiere Visa-sponsored event.

John Godina also turned in a world-leading performance at USA Indoors, winning Saturday's men's shot put with a mark of 21.83 meters/71 feet, 7.5 inches. The three-time world outdoor champion, three-time world indoor medalist and two-time Olympic gold medalist took home the men's Visa Championship.

In other track action, Wallace Spearmon Jr., of the University of Arkansas, improved his world-leading time set earlier this year when he blazed to a school and meet record time of 20.35 seconds in the 200m preliminaries at the SEC Indoor Track & Field Championships in Fayetteville Ark. Also at SEC Indoors, senior Nicole Cook of Tennessee set a collegiate record in the 800 meters with a time of 2:00.75, bettering the 2:01.65 set in 1994 by Wisconsin's Amy Wickus. The senior Petersburg, Va., native captured her second-straight SEC Indoor 800m crown.

Other outstanding performances include Stanford's Erica McLain, who leaped 13.90m/45-7.25 to set a school record and win the 2005 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championship. It is the best mark ever by an American junior (19-and-under) athlete, indoors or out. She also won the long jump with the second-best mark in school history of 6.27m/20-7. 2004 World Junior Championships team member Sarah Bowman (Fauquier High - Va.) ran 2:43.40 in the 1000m to better the national high school record of 2:45.46, set in 2003 by Ari Lambie of Massachusetts.

Now in its fifth year, USATF's Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on the USATF website. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.

2005 USATF Athlete of the Week Winners: January 4, Amy Rudolph; January 11, Dathan Ritzenhein; January 18, Janine Davis; January 25, Wallace Spearmon Jr.; February 1, Erin Gilreath; February 8, LaShawn Merritt; February 15, LaShawn Merritt; February 22, Walter Davis; March 1, Angela Daigle.
